A set of commemorative gold coins are set to be issued this week to honour the gold medal that was won by Korean figure skater Kim Yu-na in the recent Winter Olympic Games, it has been revealed.

The Korean Olympic Committee announced the move, which will see gold coins being produced featuring depictions of the figure skater in action.

"We will issue commemorative coins to celebrate Kim's gold medal and share the moment of joy," stated the committee.

The gold numismatic pieces are set to be manufactured by the Perth Mint of Australia and will therefore feature the head of Queen Elizabeth on the reverse of the coin.

Profits from the sales of the gold coins –-which can be purchased for 880,000 won (£510) - will go towards helping to fund sports facilities in South Korea.

Ms Yu-na scored a total of 228.56 points in the women's figure skating event at the recent Vancouver Winter Olympics, beating her closest rival, Mao Asada, of Japan, by 23 points.
