"Man-gagement" rings take off in US

The tradition of his and hers engagement rings dates back to the 15th century and in some European countries, exchanging gold bands prior to tying the knot is the norm - now engagement rings for men are taking off in the US.

According to ABC News, more and more men in the States are picking out their own bands to celebrate their commitment.

Elayne Fluker of Brides magazine said the trend reflects couples "looking for new ways to commemorate their relationship" and "celebrate their love" before the big day itself.

"I would say the men's engagement ring is definitely having its moment," Ms. Fluker commented.

Indeed, the demand for "man-gagement" rings has grown to the extent that high end designers including New York's Scott Kay and Neil Lane of Los Angeles are including them in their ranges of wedding jewellery.

Earlier this year, Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson presented her fiance, David Otunga, with an engagement ring from Neil Lane.
