A gold ring worth $50,000 (£30,225) has been won through a contest organised by a pair of jewellers in the US.

National Jeweler reports that more than 16,000 people from across the country took part in the competition, staged by Samuels Jewelers and Rogers Jewelers.

The companies offered the gold ring as part of efforts to mark the beginning of the wedding season and entries were received from 132 stores.

Christina Johnson of Colorado was ultimately named as the winner and she expressed surprise at her good fortune.

Earlier this month, a student living in Wellington, New Zealand received a gold wedding ring through a treasure hunt.

Ryan Roselli, aged 21, was the successful hunter after Anthony Gardiner decided to give away the ring rather than sell it on, having been turned down when he proposed to his girlfriend.

Mr Gardiner had bought the item in Hong Kong for NZ$5,000 (£1,950).
