Golden souvenirs from China

Friday, 22nd August 2008 (900 views)
Fans of the Beijing Olympic Games who are trying to work out which is the best souvenir to take back home may want to consider the commemorative gold coin on offer, reports the Province.

However, souvenir hunters must be willing to shell out for the $1 million (£538,922) price-tag attached to the 10 kg coin which was commissioned by the government in China and created in Canada.

Those on the hunt for something a bit more purse-friendly may want to take a trip into the 2008 Olympic Superstore in Beijing, a 3000 sq m building with 500 members of staff and 40 cashiers.

According to marketing manager Hu Jingmei, the shop has been doing around $800,000 a day in sales.

For the more adventurous, small figurines depicting pandas doing Olympic events made from real panda droppings are also on sale.

Earlier this month, the Perth Mint in Australia also announced it was to create a series of gold commemorative coins for the Olympics, reported Yahoo! news.
