Gold Rush coin to go on exhibition

Monday, 30th June 2008 (874 views)
A gold coin dating from 1854 is to go on display in Baltimore as part of an exhibition, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money will display the $20 coin which is now estimated to be worth $3 million.

The owner of the coin, and president of Rare Coin Wholesalers of Dana Point, Steven L Contursi, said: "When you pick up this coin, you're literally holding Gold Rush history in your hands."

He added this will be the first time the coin has been seen in Baltimore in 28 years.

Also known as the Kellogg Twenty, the gold coin was made by John Glover Kellogg, a New Yorker who worked as an assayer during the Gold Rush.

In 1980 the coin was auctioned for $230,000 by the John Hopkins University.

The American Numismatic Association is an organisation to promote the study and collecting of coins. It currently has nearly 33,000 members.
