Classic film's gold jewellery to go on display

Thursday, 5th June 2008 (1146 views)
Gold jewellery worn by screen legend Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 epic Cleopatra is to go on display as part of a new exhibition dedicated to Egypt's female pharaohs and the women who helped shape the ancient empire, it has been reported.

Redorbit.com states items from the film included in the Queens of Egypt show include a royal headdress in the shape of a vulture, engraved bracelets and double chains embossed with gold medallions.

These pieces of Hollywood history will appear alongside 250 other artefacts in Monaco, including a gold-handled mirror in the shape of the goddess Hathor, a gold diadem set and a gold collar necklace that belonged to Queen Tiy, the wife of Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep III.

Overall, the site adds, the exhibit will be the largest Egyptian-themed display ever to go on show in Europe.

Curator Christiane Ziegler told the site: "In the western imagination, the queens of Egypt are incarnated in Cleopatra and the enduring images created by Hollywood.

"The jewellery and accessories worn by Elizabeth Taylor for the film were an integral part in creating these images."
