Fake gold a 'problem' in Glasgow

Thursday, 29th March 2007 (8060 views)
A flood of fake gold jewellery in Scotland has resulted in three more arrests, this time in Glasgow, reports Scottish newspaper The Evening Times.

Along with hassling Scots over the goods, it is also alleged that some eastern Europeans are also using aggressive tactics if their offers are spurned.

Arrested and charged with fraud offences were two Romanian nationals in Argyle Street, Glasgow, last week and local police have declared the arrests of three more women in the city.

A spokesperson from the Home Office told The Evening Times: "The majority of Romanians who come to the UK are law-abiding. But we will be tough on those who seek to abuse our rules."

There is no actual gold in the fake items at all, Trading Standards officers have warned and the pieces being flouted by the criminals are engraved with fake hallmarks.

Recently, David Thomson, chief of South Ayrshire Trading Standards explained that Ayrshire had been targeted by both Romanian and Bulgarian scammers in relation to fake gold and he had taken the measure of posting a warning to the culprits in the area in their mother tongue.
