007 – Licence to eat pizza

Wednesday, 14th February 2007 (4052 views)
One lucky lady will receive the feast of a lifetime this Valentine's Day after an Italian lawyer ordered the world's most expensive pizza.

To celebrate the day for lovers, Maurizio Morelli won an eBay auction last year to have the gold-topped pizza created by Glasgow restaurateur Domenico Crolla.

Adorned with 24-carat edible gold from the Queen's jeweller Mappin & Webb, the culinary delight also comprises Beluga champagne-soaked caviar, lobster, Scottish smoked wild salmon and white truffles.

The Valentine's Day treat is entitled the Pizza Royale 007, in homage to James Bond, and Mr Crolla believes he can match the exploits of the world famous spy when it comes to wooing the ladies.

"We Italians are experts at 'amore' and I think this pizza will show that the way to a woman's heart is definitely through her stomach," Mr Crolla said.

The sale of the pizza ensured that funds went towards The Fred Hollows Foundation, a charity that was launched in Sydney back in 1992 that aims to develop health infrastructure in developing countries for the blind and restore the sight of visually impaired people.
