A set of gold coins impressed with the image of Hindu deity Lord Jagannath is being minted in Germany.

QuestNet India, an enterprise and subsidiary of direct marketing company QI Group, has launched the coins.

Lord Jagannath, meaning Lord of the World, is the name of one incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu.

In line with the common depiction, the coins portray Jagannath beside his brother Balram and sister Subhadra.

1,000 of the gold coins have been minted, with 999.9 purity. They weigh six grams each. A silver coin, with a weight of ten grams and showing the god, has also been minted.

Divya Singh, head priest of the Puri Jagannath temple said according to Zee news that the "sole purpose was the promotion of Lord Jagannath Sanskruti."

He added: "Through the medallions a lot of people around the world will see Lord Jagannath and the temple, and will come to know about him."

Currently foreigners are not allowed to enter the Puri Jagannath temple.
