Police investigate "suspicious" gold jewellery robbery

Jewellery worth $400,000 (£209,000) has been reported to have been stolen from a salesman in broad daylight, however, the details of the incident have been described as "suspicious" by a Michigan detective.

Among the 400 items of jewellery allegedly taken in the robbery in Frenchtown Township were 14-carat gold and diamond rings as well as bracelets and necklaces.

The salesman has claimed that he was held up at gunpoint on the hard shoulder of the motorway at 12:30 local time whereby the thieves fled with the stash.

Michigan State Police Detective Sergeant David Meyer remarked: "How they would know to pull over that specific car is what we want to find out."

He added: "And why would they force him over on the freeway?"

The robbers that got away with the salesman's gold are described by police as black males in their mid-30s and both men had armed themselves with semi automatic weapons to use in the stick up.

Dixie highway, where the alleged robbery took place, was the first highway to link the south of America with the north. Police are baffled by this case as the highway was very busy at the time the jewellery was said to have been stolen.
