Second arrest over gold slipper theft

Wednesday, 5th July 2006 (3988 views)
A second man has been arrested for the theft of a pair of golden slippers from a museum in Canada.

Mico Petric, 33, was arrested on Tuesday morning and charged with the theft of the slippers from Toronto's Bata Shoe Museum in January.

His arrest follows that of Filip Djukic, 35, who was charged with a similar offence in March.

The £78,000 slippers, which are said to have once been worn by the prince of Hyderabad in the late 18th century, are embroidered with gold and studded with rubies, diamonds and emeralds.

A gold anklet and toe ring, worth an estimated £27,000, were also taken from the display case.

All three items were recovered shortly after Mr Djukic's arrest, after a shop owner had photographed the alleged perpetrator while he attempted to make a number of digital prints of the haul.

It remains unclear how the continued investigation led to Mr Petric's arrest.
