Stolen jewellery returned to British High Commissioner

Tuesday, 4th July 2006 (3956 views)
Several items of jewellery stolen from the residence of the British High Commissioner's residence in Wellington, New Zealand have been returned.

Valued at tens of thousands of dollars, some of the gold, diamond and pearl antiques, including a diamond and gold tiara, were handed in to Lower Hutt police station, while the other items were recovered from a nearby hotel.

The High Commissioner, George Ferguson, has said that he is very pleased to see almost all of the items returned safely, particularly as some have been associated with his family for generations.

Charges are to be brought against Brendan Murray McMichael, a 31-year-old man, at Wellington District Court on Wednesday (5 July) in connection with the theft.
