1930s Cup medal for auction

An English FA Cup winner's medal from the 1937 final, which used to belong to Sunderland wing-half Alexander McNab, will be up for auction at Sotheby's in London on May 10th, reports Sunderland Today.

The medal, made of 14-carat gold, is valued at between £4,000 and £6,000 and will be auctioned alongside the short-sleeved shirt the former Scottish international wore for the game.

A second medal belonging to McNab will also be auctioned, a 14-carat gold 1936 FA Charity Shield medal valued at around £700.

Sunderland's victory in the Cup final of 1937 was the first time the club from the north east had successfully lifted the famous trophy, beating Preston North End 3-1, having also appeared in one final before then in 1913.

The medal is being auctioned by sporting memorabilia specialists Graham Budd. It shows the Football Association crest on the front, is inscribed with "ALEC MCNAB, SUNDERLAND, WINNERS, 1936-1937" on the reverse and comes in its original case.
