White gold rings for Super Bowl victors

This year's Super Bowl rings are yet to be awarded, but have a high standard to match after last year's winners were awarded with white gold rings.

The 14-carat rings were encrusted with 124 diamonds and three miniature versions of the Super Bowl trophy.

In 2004 the rings cost $15,000 each and had 104 encrusted diamonds, indicating that this year's are also likely to be more flash considering that a 30 second advert now costs $2.5 million.

White gold is typically made by alloying gold with platinum and is often coated in the more expensive metal too, to give a greater lustre. As white gold is cheaper than platinum, it is often seen as a low-cost alternative, though as last year's costs show, white gold rings will not necessarily be cheap for Super Bowl's organisers.

One winner is reportedly already a fan of platinum jewellery, with CBS saying that Duce Staley of the winning Steelers team has lost an 8.5in platinum bracelet following an altercation in a club.

Last year it was the New England Patriots that walked away with the white gold rings and this year's victors should be receiving their rings in the near future.
