A London jewellery firm is offering innovative jewellery, which could help save elephants at threat from ivory traders.

DeMEC, is a jewellers set up by Antonio DeMendoza and his wife and uses vegetable ivory to create items.

A host of elegant necklaces, earrings and bracelets are designed by Maria DeMondoza and her sister, combining the ivory with gold or other precious metals.

Anthony Power, a London-based jewellery designer, told CNN: "I don't like working with ivory knowing the environmental costs of it so ivory is a complete no-no…If I wanted to design something that provided what ivory does then this is an alternative."

The items are sold at various markets around London and the company tries to educate people on the product that could help to save elephants and rainforests.

Vegetable ivory is an organic material found in South American rainforests, however it is a major commodity and looks like real ivory.track
