Solange Azagury Partridge

SOLANGE AZAGURY PARTRIDGE

London-based jewellery designer, Solange Azagury Partridge has made waves in the style world during the l990s with her barrier breaking fine jewellery. Uninhibited and inspired by her own passion for jewels, she has brought fresh ideas and influences to fine jewellery. Famed for her fearlessly huge rings, for her personal style and for her celebrity clients, often designers themselves, she has also turned her talents to interior design, and today combines running her own jewellery business and shop in London, with the challenges of working in Paris as the new Creative Director of Boucheron.

“My style has been called baroque, even exotic, but I don’t have a label for it myself. I’m not sure where it comes from. My instincts? I suppose it must be a genetic thing, as my origins are French-Moroccan, and although I have never lived in Morocco, I do see that eastern flavour coming out in my designs. I have also always been inspired by the great classic jewellers, like Boucheron, and influenced particularly by the designer Suzanne Belperron.â€

“ The first time I encountered her work, with its courageous combinations of materials, colour and form, I realised that she was not inhibited by the rules of jewellery making, and I loved that. I do believe that traditional training can limit your views. I have no formal training and my lateral approach gives me a sense of freedom. I am also influenced by the ways and means of making jewellery. There are so many techniques and I feel that I want to explore all of them.â€

“ I think my jewellery has evolved. Out of financial necessity, I started with base metals and rough, uncut semi precious stones, and I have now moved on. It’s very different now. I realise that I do have a certain style; people can always recognise my jewellery, but I don’t want to be typecast. For my last collection, the Cosmic Collection, which drew on images from the Bible, I explored the possibilities of gem cutting, and inlays, working with craftsmen in Germany.â€

“Before that, my Kinetic collection, with moving and spinning diamonds, was also a major departure for me. Now I have made a new mini-collection, seven pieces inspired by the talismanic number Seven. I think the idea of the talisman is going to be very important. This year, I have also made a Golden Jubilee ring, huge and crown shaped, in gold, set with diamonds and little fringed emerald drops. My grandmother adored the Queen, and I adored my grandmother.

“Jewellery is all about colour now too. People are not so afraid of colour, or of volume. Right now, you can buy anything, any style. Through your jewellery, you can be the person you think you are. There’s something for everyone. Jewellery, and jewellery buying is so intensely personal. It’s not like buying a piece of clothing. Jewellery has its own cycles, its own fashions, and you always go back to a piece of jewellery. Eventually it becomes even more desirable. Jewels are expressions of your innermost feelings.

“I love gold, I have always loved gold. I think it’s in my blood too. And I love red gold the most, probably because of my skin tone, which tends to go a reddish brown colour. My favourite stone is the ruby, I love red gold and rubies, hot blooded colours. I also love yellow or white gold, for different people, different styles, different occasions. That’s the beauty of gold, it’s so individual, and everyone has a perfect gold tone to suit them. Whatever the colour, gold gives you a glow. “
