Page 1. Paloma Picasso has one of the most famous names in modern history. One of the most famous names in the history of art. A name that changed the world. And she wears it well. Because, alongside her enviably individual personal style, and her profound respect for and pride in her father’s work, she is herself one of the world’s most successful jewellery designers. An exclusive Tiffany “nameâ€, and one of the very few jewellery names and talents recognised and acknowledged all over the world. Paloma Picasso talks exclusively to goldinspirations.
Page 2. Paloma Picasso is a woman designing for women. Her instinctively bold and graphic style exudes a rare resonance and power. Uncompromising and unmistakable. The designer has cleverly galvanised her innate sense of form and colour into mesmerising modern “statement†jewels that have now come to stand for a whole new approach by women to wearing jewels today. “Women are coming up to me now and telling me how they have bought my jewellery for themselves.
Page 3. “They are often surprised they’ve done it, but proud, it’s a big step and an achievement. It meant a lot to them, and gives them a sense of power. The same sense of power and self you gain when wearing a big ring, a ring that you yourself can see when you’re talking. The ring, especially, has been a sign of power throughout the ages. Today there is a huge difference with women buying their own jewels.
Page 4. “I am always trying to push big jewellery. People often think big jewellery is only for big people. But it depends on your features. Strong features need strong jewellery. There is also a certain simplicity in my jewellery to balance the size, something simple and bold, which is about shape and contrast. In my gold jewellery, part of the design is always an open space. I’ve always loved the interplay between empty and full, creating outlines.
Page 5. “ I mostly use rich l8 carat yellow gold, especially hammered gold. Colour is my number one priority; it’s what makes me tick. Colour is a natural preoccupation, it’s in all of the family, and it makes me happy. Gold is warm; it’s an embracing, reassuring and cocooning material. There is a deep seated reason for the huge following gold has had through the centuries. When I think of a piece I always think in gold, and the original is always made in gold.
Page 6. “When you buy a piece of gold jewellery from me, it is not finished. You have to finish it yourself, by wearing it. It is too matt at the beginning; I don’t like gold to look too metallic, I like a certain mellowness that comes as the gold develops its special sheen. The imperfections or irregularities in the hammering also create a soft and very individual gleam. As a little girl I liked silver, but when I worked for the Greek jeweller, Zolotas, in l971, the shop was like a Museum of gold.
Page 7. “It was clear then that I would focus on gold, and I have never let go since. Even when white metal became so popular I couldn’t let go of gold and I had to find a way of combining both, which was the Magic collection. But generally a jewel follows its own course, and is much more than a fashion accessory. A jewel should be something you treasure and keep for years, pass on from generation to generation. I am very attached to that idea.
Page 8. “The idea of a talisman, a very powerful concept, lies behind every jewel. A jewel should be intensely personal and private, with a strong emotional depth, a sense of protection, which may come simply from the fact that someone gave it to you, or that you were bought it for yourself, as an achievement. A jewel should make you think of the moments you have lived with it. And I am always thrilled when my jewellery has become a part of someone else’s life. In a very positive way.â€
