Mario Boselli is Chairman of the National Chamber for Italian Fashion, a nonprofit association (established in 1958), which aims to protect, co-ordinate and strengthen the development of the Italian fashion both in Italy and abroad. The Association is the point of reference, as well as the preferential mouthpiece, for all the national and international initiatives aimed at promoting Italian style. The Chamber, (192 associates among the various segments of the textile and clothing sectors – including leading fashion houses; Ferragamo, Missoni, Burani, Gucci, Fendi, Valentino, Krizia, Etro, Bottega Veneta, Rocco Barocco, Biagiotti, and Trussardi), organizes four annual prêt-à-porter events: Milano Collezioni Donna (February-March and September-October), and Milano Collezioni Uomo (January and June-July). The two events held in Rome are linked to haute-couture.
In an exclusive interview with lifestyle journalist Roberta Marangoni he talks about the growing relationship between fashion and gold.
1- How do you feel about the synergy between gold jewellery and fashion?
“In the last ten years we have seen an important move from the fashion industry to jewellery. Almost all important fashion designers have included jewellery in their assortment as a natural brand extension. As a matter of fact, some have even developed (directly or indirectly) different lines of jewellery in order to match the different lines of fashion (Alta Moda, prêt a porter etc). It is clear that accordingly there are different “preciousness” levels and price positioning. The top line is produced with gold jewellery, stones and diamonds, while the “young line” is less precious and more design oriented”.
2- Would you agree on the concept that design forward gold jewellery is a natural
extension of the fashion industry?
“Many leading Italian Fashion Houses, are now including the jewellery segment in their global luxury market growth strategy, both with their own brands and with specially created collections. Some important fashion brands have detected that important opportunities can be found in the precious and semi-precious jewellery market and are investing heavily in acquisitions of established brands. The idea is to apply the existing vast experience in communication and management in the fashion industry to the jewellery world, which has also been product focused and not client focused and was thus unable to invest adequate funds in marketing and PR activities”.
3- Is fine jewellery making an impact on fashion?
“In reality it is the other way round; today the fashion industry is more advanced and consolidated than the jewellery industry, which has very few global players and limited resources. However, without any question there are more and more synergies between the two worlds; the fashion collections have become more and more utilised by the jewellery market by use of colours (yellow, white, pink gold, platinum, silver and precious stones are complementing the fabric colour selection) and timing (the concept of two collections per year has also been adopted by many players of the jewellery industry)”.
4- What do you personally feel about gold?
“Gold is the most important existing definition of value since mankind began. Its solar yellow colour and glitter cannot be compared to any other precious metal”.
