"While all the trend signs and signals have pointed this way for several seasons, particularly in the strengthening overlap between clothes and jewels, fabrics and gems, gold is now firmly ensconced as fashion's favourite, as the colour and material, tone and texture of the moment. Both heroic and Hollywood in feeling, timelessly contemporary, touched with both history and futurism, and offering a deep emotional engagement, gold has become part of the cut and thrust of couture, embodying today's hyper-luxury and the new metallic mood that has swept the catwalks this season.
"Gold has surfaced in fabric and leather, adding touches of Summer-of-Love Boho chic. It has added a Midas touch to accessories, especially shoes and bags, including this year's must-have metal clutch bag, reprising the gold "minaudiere", pioneered in the 1930s by Van Cleef & Arpels, a jewel in its own right, kitted out with compartments for lipstick, powder, mirror and more.
"What makes today's gold in fashion so new is the way in which it adds sheen, shimmer and emotive richness by blending high-octane '70s jet-set glamour with a cool, hip-hop street-style edge, illustrated in Louis Vuitton's new collaboration with rap star Pharrell Williams. Groovy gold".

Fine jewellery celebrates this masterful moment of gold in fashion, exploring colour, form, movement and texture, pushing technical boundaries, playing with fashion's favourite themes, or like Dall'Avo, for Treemme mixing gold with new high-tech materials like black and white ceramics. For his Foglie collection, Mariano Favero balances the subtle colours of pink and white gold with the movement of overlapping cut-out leaf shapes, in an elliptical marquise form, one of the jewellery world's own fashion-forward messages for the season.

Like fashion, gold jewellery today has to reflect its moment in time, and be relevant to women's dreams, desires and lifestyles. Vicenza artisan-goldsmith, Maria Loretta de Toni echoes fashion through her intensely feminine designs, influenced by world cultures and civilisations, and her Royal Renaissance enamelled charm bracelet taps into a rich seam of Tudor or Renaissance style that has permeated both fashion and jewellery. Alfieri &St John, meanwhile, pick up on fashion's flirtation with the 70s, translating a mix of space-age and hippie influences into Legami d'Amore, bouncing concentric circles of coloured and heavily textured gold that make a strong fashion statement.
