24. GOLD IN FASHION
Fashion designers work in terms of ‘statements’, which is why they tend to have a love-hate relationship with gold jewellery. For seasons a designer might decide that minimalist – no extraneous details, no baubles and definitely no gold - suits their streamlined aesthetic. And then suddenly a sea change occurs. One designer might make gold jewellery the focus of their catwalk, but more often what you will notice are gilt accents seeping in.
“The odd bracelet here, chains there or gold-rimmed sunglasses accompanied by - the currently ubiquitous - golden sandals and handbags. Which is where we are now. Pure gold, bling-free, has been on its way back for a few seasons, and each designer uses it in their own particular style.
