British designer-jeweller Stephen Webster has forged a reputation
as a “Rock Star†jeweller, the
Golden Boy of contemporary fine jewellery. He sells in Britain and
across the United States, and also in Japan and Moscow where he has
recently opened his own boutique.
“My style is probably best described as
confident; I try to make jewellery as glamorous as it can be, and
there’s a touch of Gothic about it too. People
expect my jewellery to be challenging, edgy, colourful, bold, and I
try to develop my new collections within the confines of that
particular style. Interestingly though, my jewellery crosses
genders and also appeals to men.â€

“I do sell to Rock Stars, like Ozzie or Elton,
and then I can design what I like, which I really enjoy. Mostly
they want yellow gold, and in Los Angeles in general,
there’s a lot more yellow gold being worn. As a
craftsperson and a designer, I find 18 carat yellow gold the
ultimate material, the most satisfying, most malleable to work. I
love the way gold looks and particularly the finishes it takes,
hard, soft or textured. No other material does
that.â€

“Now, with a shift away from the heavily gemset
look, yellow gold by itself is quite casual, and younger clients
think it’s hip. White gold without stones is
not as satisfying as yellow gold, and yellow gold works well with
warm colours of stones, and opaque materials. There is a warmth and
confidence about gold; young women are so confident about their
individual style today. Not so long ago, young women came into the
shop and said, “My mother would love this . .
.†Now the mother comes in and says,
“My daughter would love this . .
