Celebrating his 25th anniversary in business this year, David
Yurman has become the quintessential American jewellery brand. His
own style of easy, relaxed, contemporary glamour, in silver, gold
and gemstones, was first developed by Yurman, together with his
wife Sybil, in a farmhouse in upstate New York, 25 years ago.
“The David Yurman style, classic, contemporary,
American luxury, has evolved organically, and although it has my
name, my wife Sybil and I have built the brand together. We were
both artists, Sybil made pottery, I was a sculptor, doing hammered
bronze, and it was all about our relationship, and still is.
“The balance we strive for in our aesthetic choices always comes from the same well. Sybil comes up with concepts, I do a lot of initial drawings and we work with a group, people from merchandising, marketing, like a family. Originally, we went with the cable motif as a universal element, something to hang our hat on as a brand, but many other elements are involved. Our jewellery is part of dress, worn by women, from boardroom to ballroom, for pleasure and a statement of empowerment. There has to be an emotional connection.
“Gold represents the greatest opportunity for us now. Gold for me is yellow; we had been living in a white world, but things are warming up now. When we design a piece, even if it’s just a form, we know immediately it’s gold. Gold is a lot more sensual than silver, the best metal to work, as it becomes like butter. It has a natural warmth that is about the imperfect; it is organic, and can be off balance and asymmetric. Working with gold, there is always something of richness, strength and heritage.â€
