MEET: NINA SILBERSTEIN of DAVID WEBB

David Webb is the name synonymous with quintessentially American jewellery, with a strong bold gold jet-setting style, that he originated in the 1950s and 60s and which is continued and contemporised today for a new, younger clientele, by Webb’s original partner, Nina Silberstein.

“David Webb is all about yellow gold.  Most of our jewellery is made in 18 carat yellow gold, and this is really what makes the jewellery exciting.   Gold, to us, is a wonderful treasure, warm, workable, versatile, and it also enhances a woman’s looks, her clothes, and looks, and feels, wonderful against the skin. 

“David Webb jewels are created like art objects, we think of them as sculptures, conceived and modelled, in our new New York, Madison Avenue shop and workshops,  like a work of art, and this is made possible through gold.  David Webb has always drawn inspiration from many sources, from the animal kingdom, from ancient cultures and civilisations, and this too provides a link with gold.  And since gold retains a value, and a strong look, which still looks right after 20 or 30 years, the jewel becomes something much more than just a trinket.

“I always had a hunger for art, for design, and my mind is still constantly wandering as far as design is concerned. At David Webb, we run the whole gamut of designs and techniques, and because we love colour, we mix gold with rich stones, emeralds, rubies and pearls, and most famously with enamels which work so well on gold.  It is exciting for us that young people are looking at our jewellery differently, with fresh eyes, opening up to design.  It is like a revelation.
