MEET: PIERRE RAINERO
PAGE 1
Pierre Rainero is the Heritage Director of Cartier, with
responsibility for creative direction and strategy at brand level.
Cartier’s Heritage department has grown out of
the original archive department, set up in the late 1970s, and now
actively participates in the artistic direction of the House of
Cartier.
“Heritage is a key word, in understanding what Cartier style is about. Style is built, day after day; it is something you have to learn, through knowledge, and experience, from documents, archives, the pieces in our Museum Collection, which give us a sense of proportion, volume, and design vocabulary.â€

“Jewellery is linked to a very specific process
in terms of creation, to craftsmanship and manufacture, and so is
not as whimsical as fashion can be. There is always a continuous
movement back and forth, between the design atelier and the
workshop. Our direction now is focused on jewellery for women of
today. We learn all we can about how they live, work, how they
experience social life. A Cartier jewel accompanies a woman of the
world in her life. Jewellery today is about expressing individual
femininity and personality. That is why the brooch is so important
now; it is the best jewel for self-expression.â€

“Gold is very specific to Cartier, one of its
strengths, and an expression of Cartier’s
modernity. In 1924, the Trinity ring, forward-looking and modern,
also symbolised fidelity, love and friendship. That element of
symbolism is becoming stronger and stronger. While coloured gold
and goldworking techniques, like
“gaudrons†often used on
accessories and objects, have become a Cartier leitmotif. Working
only in metal, design becomes key and the creative process is even
more closely linked to craftsmanship. As culture becomes more
important in jewellery, Cartier jewels are becoming part of the art
market. Every day we build the heritage of
tomorrow.â€
